To our stakeholders, partners, and the wider AWAFY community,
We extend our sincere appreciation to all parties for their patience and trust throughout this process. We are grateful for the continued support demonstrated by our partners and the broader AWAFY community during the course of the investigation. We fully recognize that matters involving accountability and justice are never simple, yet they remain at the very heart of the values upon which AWAFY was founded and continue to guide our work in service of Sudanese communities.
AWAFY was established on the principles of justice, equality, transparency, impartiality, and accountability, and these principles have remained our compass in all circumstances. Throughout the investigation period, we closely followed the various discussions and appeals surrounding the matter. While some interventions reflected a genuine commitment to justice and accountability, others pursued different objectives. AWAFY’s decision not to engage in public debates or respond through social media platforms was deliberate and rooted in our commitment to protecting the integrity and independence of the investigative process. We believed it was essential to allow the independent committees to carry out their work free from interference and external pressures, while safeguarding the dignity and privacy of all parties involved.
AWAFY’s Zero-Tolerance Position on Domestic Violence
AWAFY unequivocally rejects all forms of violence and abuse affecting Sudanese communities. Our communities have endured immense suffering and continue to face grave challenges. We firmly believe that justice, accountability, and an end to impunity are essential foundations for sustainable peace and social transformation. Holding perpetrators accountable and ensuring that victims and survivors have access to justice remain central to our mission.
Actions Taken by AWAFY
- On June 11, AWAFY contacted the complainant to explain the internal reporting channels and complaint handling mechanisms.
- On June 12, AWAFY officially received the complaint through its internal reporting channels.
- On June 18, AWAFY initiated an internal assessment.
- On June 23, the case was referred to AWAFY’s Board of Directors as it was deemed a matter requiring high-level institutional intervention.
- On June 24, an internal investigation committee was formed to gather information, facts, and evidence related to the case.
- On June 29, the internal committee concluded its work and submitted its preliminary findings to the Board of Directors, On the same date (June 29), the Board of Directors issued a decision to suspend the employee in question pending the completion of the necessary procedures.
- On July 3, the Board of Directors formed an independent external expert committee to conduct an independent and impartial investigation.
- The committee commenced its work immediately upon its formation, with the support and supervision of the Board of Directors, On August 16, the independent expert committee concluded its work and submitted its final report and recommendations to the Board of Directors.
- On August 17, the parties concerned were informed of the results of the investigation and the recommendations issued.
General Conclusion
The Independent Expert Committee has completed its work and investigation in full and has submitted its findings and recommendations to the relevant parties in accordance with the organization’s established procedures. The Committee recommended that appropriate measures and actions be taken in line with the applicable institutional, governance, and regulatory frameworks.
Given the sensitivity of the matter and in order to protect all parties involved, AWAFY affirms that it will not disclose any confidential information or details that could cause harm to any individual or compromise their privacy. This commitment is grounded in the organization’s principles of do no harm, protection of privacy, and the confidentiality of information and evidence, as stipulated in AWAFY’s policies and procedures.
AWAFY reaffirms its commitment to transparency, accountability, and institutional integrity. The organization remains open to receiving inquiries and feedback through its official communication channels only, in accordance with its established policies and procedures, while ensuring the protection of confidential information and safeguarding the privacy of all parties concerned.
Final Remarks
AWAFY commends the professionalism, independence, and diligence demonstrated by the Independent Expert Committee throughout this process. We also acknowledge and appreciate the responsible approach shown by many members of the AWAFY community, partners, and stakeholders who respected due process and allowed the investigation to proceed without interference.
AWAFY remains committed to responding to legitimate questions and inquiries through its official channels. At the same time, the organization will not tolerate attempts to undermine its reputation, interfere with its governance processes, or compromise the integrity of its work. Any deliberate efforts targeting the institution will be addressed through the appropriate organizational and legal channels.
